Certificate in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology

This ITEC accredited certificate in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology is designed to impart students with a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, physiology and related pathologies (diseases) of the human body. However this certificate is unique in that it not only offers students an in-depth understanding of orthodox healthcare theories into disease progression but also includes brand new and exciting research into the Functional Medicine perspective on chronic disease. About the Course

This 5-7 month certificate course, written to UK level 4 (Irish level 6) forms part of the IHS Diploma in Nutritional Therapy but may also be completed as a stand alone qualification for those interested in gaining a solid foundation in the study of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology prior to furthering their studies in the health sciences. It takes a comprehensive look at all systems of the body, how they function and related pathologies from both an orthodox and Functional Medicine perspective. Additional crucial information on current treatment options and the prevalence of specific disease states in the West are also discussed.

Why Choose the Certificate in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology?

- Comprehensive and well structured study material supplied. Including ppts, written notes, video clips, quizzes and short answer questions and chances to reflect on your knowledge all designed to make the learning experience as interactive as possible

- Dynamic and interactive lecture weekends (in class students only). Designed to suit all learning types and engage students in the learning process. Lecture weekends include a mixture of formal lectures, group discussion, group exercises, role play and case studies

What will I study?

All systems of the human body are covered in detail during Module 1 of this certificate course while Module 2 covers the related pathologies, including detailed scientific information on the common diseases associated with each system of the body, common treatment options and the prevalence of these conditions particularly in Western society.

Module 1: Anatomy and Physiology

Part 1: Biochemistry, Cell, Tissues, Musculoskeletal & Digestive System

Part 2: Metabolism, The Endocrine and Nervous System

Part 3: Genetics, The Reproductive System and Special Senses

Part 4: The Urinary and Cardiovascular Systems

Part 5: The Lymphatic, Immune, Respiratory Systems and Skin

Module 2: Pathophysiology

Common pathologies from all the major systems of the body viewed from both an orthodox and Functional Medicine perspective

How is this course structured?

The course can be completed entirely via e-Learning - with the guidance of a personal tutor - with the option of students attending any related weekend lectures during the academic year, or in-class with additional comprehensive home study material. Module 1 (Anatomy and Physiology) includes 4 lecture weekends, whilst module 2 (Pathophysiology) includes 3. Each module is assessed by examination and students may take an additional ITEC multiple choice examination to obtain an ITEC Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology.

The format is modular allowing you to direct the progress of your learning. For e-learners the structured home study allows you to complete each module in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace whilst mutually agreed goals and milestones ensure that you will remain focused while still allowing you flexibility. As an e-Learning student you will be assigned a personal tutor to guide and mentor you through the programme. Online forums also ensure you recieve additional support where required.

All students are enrolled onto the IHS Learning Management System. Here you will find all course material, forums, quizzes, assessments etc in one place to help you organise your study and study material as efficiently as possible. You will also upload all assessments here and can also use it to communicate directly with module leaders, other members of staff and fellow students.

Students with no science background may choose to complete the IHS Foundation Certificate in Health Sciences prior to embarking on the Certificate in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology. Please contact the office to discuss your requirements.
