Graduate Focus – Hannah Rushton, Food For Thought Nutrition Coaching

Hannah graduated from IHS in 2019 after completing the Diploma in Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching, having her interest in nutrition sparked by her background in health - she worked for over a decade in the charitable health sector supporting stroke survivors and saw first hand the remarkable power that nutrition and lifestyle can have on chronic disease prevention and recovery.

Hannah Rushton

“I am the founder of Food For Thought Nutrition Coaching where my focus is on supporting people to maintain good lifelong health and to feel happy, healthy and confident in body and mind.

I have a background in health, having previously trained as a speech and language therapist and worked for many years supporting people in their recovery from stroke, where good nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits play a key role in prevention and rehabilitation and I have seen first-hand the incredible results that simple changes to diet and lifestyle make to a client’s long term health and wellbeing.

In addition, I have always been interested in nutrition. Pescatarian since childhood, moving to vegetarian as a young adult and, in recent years, a vegan way of life – I have always paid attention to the food I eat and ensuring that my diet contains all the nutrients my body needs to thrive.

Bringing together these two branches of interest and experience led me to the decision to retrain as a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach. My decision to study with IHS was an easy one – I was drawn to their evidence-based teaching, their holistic approach which includes lifestyle as well as nutrition, and modules in coaching to help NLCs support clients with goal-setting, motivation and engagement with their plan. I was so impressed with the quality of the course that I have since enrolled on a further course in personalised sports nutrition which I look forward to completing in the near future.

The NLC diploma has equipped me well to set up my Nutrition Coaching practice, where I support clients in my local area of Rutland and further afield via online coaching which is key to successfully connecting and working with clients now more than ever.

With my background in health, my passion is supporting clients to not only reach their health goals, but to achieve longevity of their success – quick fixes and bandaid solutions are not in my vocabulary! Whether a client dreams of reaching their goal weight, improving their energy levels and reclaiming their vitality or learning how to plan healthy, balanced meals that supports their body to function at its best, I coach my clients to create a new way of life that quickly becomes effortless, simple and sustainable. I specialise in a plant-based approach to nutrition, but clients don’t have to be vegan or plant-based to work with me as my meals plans and recipes can be adapted to each client’s dietary preferences.

I feel this is an exciting time to be starting out in the field of nutrition, as we are only just seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the remarkable power of diet and lifestyle in health and wellbeing. It was Hippocrates who said “Let food by thy medicine” and that is ever more true today as it was then.”
