Graduate Focus – Sylvía Sigurdar

Hey! I am Sylvía Sigurdar, 31 years old, originally from Iceland and a Mom to an eight year old boy. I absolutely love being active, outdoors, exercising, connecting with like minded people and I am so fortunate that I am able to this for a living. A big part of the reason that I am able to this is down to my time spent at IHS - I completed the Certificate in Health & Wellness Coaching in 2020 and Stress Management – two fantastic courses.

“I love to exercise so my health and wellness career started when I just followed my intuition and studied to become a personal trainer. The more I worked the more I could see that mental health and personal development were inextricably linked and as I made personal changes, not only did I begin to feel the impact it had on my own life and experiences but also on the people around me. While working as a personal trainer, I learned very soon that so many people need someone with them on their journey; an accountability partner. I also noticed that many people are living unconsciously; they have health challenges, suffer burn out and don‘t realise that they need someone on the sideline, coaching them to make small steps in the correct direction with patience and resilience.

I knew I had a lot more to give and I wanted to be a good role model for my son. I was working at a health and wellness retreat and also online for a health community when I started the course with IHS. The classes were very engaging and interactive, pushing me out of my comfort zone and I found the course content so interesting that I had no problem in fitting the webinars and timetable around work and family life. As part of the course you not only receive coaching which allows for personal growth but you coach others and this was really important for me. To actually perform what you learn gives you a lot of confidence, it‘s not a course where you just read and write, you actually perform and learn by doing.

Following the course, a lot changed for me in my personal life relating to work, relationships and Covid had it‘s impact too. It‘s been a challenging, interesting journey and is far from over. However, today I have never been stronger, more empowered, have more self-belief and self-awareness. I am a single parent, living in sunny Spain, working with a start-up company creating a product that I could not be more excited to launch in relation to prevention of burn-out. I have not had as much freedom and abundance before and I have a beautiful vision for the future. I will continue on my own journey and impact on other people to find their inner strength and power, challenge their belief system that doesn‘t serve them and help them find ways to live the life they want to live. I have also started my own outdoor classes with a group of lovely ladies so I have created the perfect blend of office work with physical exercise. I am doing a Yin Yoga course next month and there is so much more I want to learn, one step at a time.

Life goes by fast, and every decision gets you closer or further away from your goals, no one does it for you. So if you are waiting to do something that you really want to do, there is never a better time than now. Make any action towards where you want to be, any little step counts. It‘s better to try and fail than never to try at all.

If you are here, reading this, you already have the idea in your head, I did not know where any of this would take me, but I could not be happier I followed through on my dream and I hope you do that too. Good luck!”
